Don't have the *time* to do it, but I believe in doing things right. Since I was thrown into an application dba role about 2 years ago, I found that I have some really in depth knowledge in some areas but at the same time time horribly lacking in some very basic ones (becuase I am in development)......

I LOVE MY JOB. I LOVE ORACLE. It is such a challege and I have been lucky enoguh to have worked with a few dbas who were able to tell me to change a parameter here and paremeter there and startup recover whereas several other dbas could only suggest for me to recover from a full backup. I tell you, I want to know as much as I can so that I am able to capably handle ANY situation without resorting to full restores.

I really admire knowledge and people who have done the *time* to truly know their trades. Right now, I'm just a wannabe...... but making progress:>

Thanks for all the knowledge that is shared on this list!

That's the one Hannah !

Hey, and I really like your approach of going through the Oracle "Bible(s)". I can remember a time when I used to find time to do that myself, and I used to love it ! Please don't hesitate to throw any questions/comments you have to the wonderful folks on this list, I am sure everyone will appreciate it.

Oh and by the way while we are on the topic of lack of time, does anyone know of a way to request more than 24 hours in a day ??? :-)

Are you referring to the Index Internals Article by dan Hotka? If so, looks
like it is still current, and I found it. Thanks.

There was an excellent explanation on IOTs in "Oracle Professional" by Pinnacle Publications a few issues ago. You might be able to find it in their archive at www.pinpub.com
Let me know if you can't find it, and I'll dig up my issue and fax you a copy...

Hello List!

I'm having trouble comprehending the idea of an Index Organized table. The
Oracle 8i DBA Bible has this paragraph in it:

An index-organized table is one in which the entire table is created as an
index. All the data is stored in the index, and there

really is no underlying table. Oracle 8i allows secondary indexes to be
created on these tables, allows them to store large

objects, and allows you to add or modify columns using the ALTER TABLE command.

This is all they wrote. But I dont understand how/why one would store data in
the actual index. And if you create an index, don't you need to create it on a
specific table? And if there is NO table, then HOW could you create and index
on it. And why would you do it even if you could?

Thanks in advance,

     Hannah

P.S. I have decided to go through the *bible* with a fine tooth comb in order
to deeply ingrain Oracle 8i (use only 7.34 at work still!), hope you don't mind
posts asking for clarification. My goal is to get through the entire book stopping to clarify anything that I do not fully 120% grasp or understand:>
