I am not sure on the intent of the original poster, but I COULD use this (but I wont). I run an nt oracle server, and an application server (metaframe). All my users connect to the db server via the metaframe server. I have been looking for a way to *notify* users via the metaframe server if the DB server is down for some reason (maintenance, prod fixes etc). In the past, I typically send an email to the users stating the the system will be unavailable but it would not necessarily stop people from trying to log on (thus a million support calls). I can always log on in restricted mode but we have 5 Power Users (admins) who would still be able to log on.

I'm checking out NT messaging and other means of notification. But it would be cool to pass a system down for maintenance message directly from oracle.........

But I do not think of it as a valid solution.

To the Orignal Poster: what is your purpose in needing to do this ----- perhaps there is a better way to accomplish what you need.

Exactly! What happens when there is a patch update or even a new version? You loose all the changes (unless you document them and re-enter them if at all possible).

Don't we want Oracle to display such cryptic messages so that DBAs like us can exist to explain them!!!! :)
