Tom,
Very interesting! Funny after I sent out the original note I performed the
same check that you listed below. I confirmed that it is a 32bit binary. So
then I decided to try and apply the same patch to a couple of instances that
I upgraded to 8.1.6.2 previously, and SHAZAM, it works!
Perhaps I misread the readme but I thought the 8.1.6.2.1 was supposed to be
inclusive of all the fixes in 8.1.6.2 patch, but perhaps not. Oracle
support did not seem to suggest that 8.1.6.2 be in place before the upgrade,
so I will follow up with them to see if this is a requirement.
Thanks for your help and suggestions.
James

First, to test the version of your file, type this command:
file $ORACLE_HOME/bin/oracle
It will return something like this:
/u01/app/oracle/product/8.1.6/bin/oracle: ELF 32-bit MSB executable
SPARC
Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped
Look for the "32-bit" or "64-bit" part, that will tell you what version..
now
as far as the 8.1.6.2.1 patch goes.. first you need to apply the 8.1.6.2
patch,
then apply the 8.1.6.2.1 patch..
