I have just discovered that at least on Oracle 8.0.5 (VMS) there is a bug whereby running autotrace as an OPS$ user causes the "Error enabling STATISTICS report" message. The explain plan still works. This is fixed in 8.1.6 . Bug 556180

I'm not sure if you are on NT or UNIX. On Solaris, you will find a file called plustrce.sql in $ORACLE_HOME/sqlplus/admin. Look for it in the equivalent location on NT. Check in the top portion of the script to make sure, but I believe you run it as sys. It creates the PLUSTRACE role.

After the script completes, grant the PLUSTRACE role to those who need to set autotrace on.

While trying to set autorace on I am getting the message :

SP2-0618: Cannot find the Session Identifier. Check PLUSTRACE role is enabled

SP2-0611: Error enabling STATISTICS report

but if i try to connect as system I am able to explain plan. what should be the reason.
