All,

Oracle 8.0.5

I want to defragment a partition for space reasons but I am sure I read somewhere (SQL Reference) that if you do that then you need to rebuild the whole index, as it marks all local index partitions, non-partitioned global indexes and partitioned global indexes as unuseable and therefore needing to be rebuilt.

Is this true or have I got a hold of the wrong end of the stick ? If it is then there is no point in doing this as it would take too much time.

Lee,

I seem to remember that I did rebuild an partition index on its own, is uses the information in the current global index for that table. So if you just want to rebuild the index to change storage parameters or something like that - you can.

But I think if you add data - you may have to rebuild the whole lot - but you can in parallel.

Asit,

As part of my planned maintenance for ADW, Gary N. and I had come up with a few ideas. One of which was to rebuild the PG_UK_CUSTOMER_BRAND13 partition. This would free up approx. 2.5Gb (one of the least important ones we discovered).

Do you know of any problems or gotchas with rebuilding partitions.

As I can see it, if you rebuild the partition, the entire corresponding index (not just the relevant partition) needs to be rebuilt afterwards. Is this true ?? If it is then it isnt worth the partition rebuild.
