Steve,

It's definitely possible that this is one of the "myths" about Oracle. I remember Walter Lindsay and his papers on rollback segments, they were like lightbulbs going off for me, I finally "got it" when I saw him present.

As Gaja said, Cary may have been part of the team that came up with this number and as he became more visible to the user community, many things became "his".
