The one I get is "The app is slow. It must be the database!", which so far has never been true.

David, this is going to sound funny, but perusing through the list discussions is a realistic representation of what is expected of us.

Yes, the #1 job is backup and recovery. YOu should always be able to recover your database. The Mike Ault document is very exhaustive and you should be able to answer a majority of these questions off the top of your head, and understand why. That was a good brushup - Thanks David for sending that to the list.

However, look at all the other stuff that happens. Developers need help, management wants to know if Oracle works magic, and we don't always have the answers. That's why this list is so handy. Personally I've taken on the role of developer too. It varies a lot between shops.

<warning>

Be ready for the 'The site is down! What's wrong with the database!' accusation. 95% of the time it has nothing to do with the database. It's amazing how a well-tuned database can pretty much take care of itself.

List Members,

Is there an activity or list of activities that you would consider to be implied by the title database administrator? Making sure there is a backup for the database, for instance. I'm hoping to understand what is usually expected of a DBA.

Thanks in advance,
David Messer
