You do need downtime - it took me about four hours, and you should shut down and do cold backups of the DB and a backup of your ORACLE_HOME before doing it.

I'll send you a copy of the checklist I used backchannel.

Is there some sort of megapatch or patch bundle that can be downloaded to upgrade from 8.1.5 to 8.1.6?

Is this a fairly simple upgrade that can be done sort of transparently to the users? Or is it a major upgrade that is more appropriate to be done with a CD and a regular upgrade maintenance window of a day or two of system downtime?
