We are in the process of putting Oracle 8.1.6 on our Sun Solaris Unix box. So far we have it migrated to a DBA test instance and have opened up this instance to our developers so that they can test their applications.

Our current Oracle release and soon be old release is Oracle 8.0.4. Most of the developers applications are supported by PowerBuilder 6.5.1. The developers found that they did not change anything but point to the 8.1.6 instance and their applications seemed to run smoothly. They did not install the 8.1.6 client so they were getting to the instance using 8.0.4 client software.

My question is "Is this safe or should I mandate that they put the 8.1.6 client on their user clients?" What problems may arise if I don't?

Thanks in advance for your help!!!

Thanks !!!!
