I'm not so sure about the work from home part, but on a project last year I worked out of office several hundred miles away from the rest of the project team, and only traveled on site for short visits. The good part about that wasn't that I was isolated from everyone--there were plenty of people in my office, but that I was isolated somewhat from the managers and others on the project team. When there was a problem, I could focus on fixing it without having the manager standing behind me breathing fire down my neck. I also enjoyed the absence of casual interruptions from people who just happened to be walking by.

I think the important thing is to work in an office far removed from your boss<grin>.
