Lisa,

I agree, there appears to be some type of long standing BUG in Oracle. I normally get one or two sessions a week where the parent Unix PID or PC died and the session just will not go away. They just sit there either in a killed or sniped state forever. They only go away when the instance gets cycled which again normally requires a 'shutdown abort' to force the issue. What is really bad about these sessions is that they tend to cause a lot of rollback space consumption till the segments show up in OEM as 'FULL'. That state for a rollback segment has NOT been explained by Oracle Tech Support to date.

IN MOST CASES it does clean up after itself but runaway processes (zombies) are something I deal with daily. I have my users come and tell me if they have to control-C out of SQL*Plus, an application, or if their PC reboots, when connected to the production database because I do not want to take this chance.

Yes Oracle is clever enough to unlock the records. I think it is pmon which will go and release locks held by a user after the users session is aborted

My question is some of the users are turning off their PC while they are
locking the record, does oracle unlock the record if the user just shut down
his PC while locking. What is the process Oracle Use..

Thanks
