Hello everyone,

this one is a little bit more discussable than a one-sentence-question. A customer develops itself a www-app with oracle on the one and apache-php on the other hand. He writes a skript to test the performance of his work. (BTW this test inserts via apache-php-oci8 48000 rows in a table and measures the necessary time. The test don't matches their business, but let them...) O.K. their developing system is one machine running server and client, linux, Pentium 400 MHz, 192meg RAM. The production system is a penguin for the client to 2x500 MHz Pentium, 1 gig RAM, the production server is a sun, sun os 5.7, 1 gig ram, 2 x 600 MHz (sorry I don't know the model name), running 81500 64 bit; 100MBit between them. The customer doesn't understand that the test on his machine runs 3 mins and the production system needs 12 mins for that. The ora-server is normal installed but not tuned (It runs on raw disks and uses 200 meg ram for sga). I think tuning should be done when their website runs and the load increases. The machines are mostly idle and contains only a few data.

O.K. has anybody an idea why the the server-client system is so slow. Too much or less RAM? Metalink? That's normal? Fast Ethernet?

thnx
oli.
