Getting connected quite long....

Dear Gurus,

Need your advice about what to check, for getting connected to db from SQLPLUS or Developer take so quite long time.

When type in user/pass_at_service [enter] .... waiting for about 2 - 3 minutes
to get connected to db. or sqlplus prompt.
Even this done from server console itself.

We're using :
* Oracle 8i db on HP Unix, 750 M SGA,
* port 1521 & 1526 both opened
