Thanks for the response.. I think :)

Fair enough, this can't be done in SQL it seems, but how would I then do it with PL/SQL? You'll have to forgive my coding skills, which are in fact almost nonexistent - Next stage of training I think !!

How about a "trivial" answer to the question ? :->

A person whose only tool is a hammer will treat all problems as if they are nails!
Virtually NOTHING is impossible through software if your are willing to throw enough resourses at the problem.

You keep insisting that only SQL be used. AFAIK, SQL has NO way to "branch on condition"; ie IF ... THEN ... and base it subsequent actions on some value.

The solution is "trivial" via PL/SQL.
