shutdown hanging

I have set up oracle 8.1.6 in Sun OS 5.7

There was no problem in shutting down the database till yesterday. This morning I have the shutdown command in server manager as

shutdown immediate;

it was hanging, there was not active session also. then I gave shutdown abort and then restarted the database, again I have shutdown immediate; still it is hanging!

What could be the reason?
