Cherie, I'm the only oracle DBA and I split the Sun SA work with our Sybase DBA. The Sybase DBA manages our DW and 1 Sybase database. I also spend quite a bit of time on app design and development. I have 2 production servers with 1 database each. One has only 1 major application. The other has 5 major applications and looking to double in size this fall. Since the apps are all OLTP with similar requirements there is one instance/server with the apps each divided into their own schema and tablespaces. I have 4 development systems, 1 test, and 1 QA database in use now (there are a couple more that are just playthings for all my free time). Is there any sort of rule-of-thumb for how many database that a DBA should be expected to support? I realize that the answer would vary based on size of databases, stability, production vs. development, mission critical, 24/7, etc. But in general, how many databases would you think a DBA should be supporting if you divide the total number of databases in an organization by the number of DBAs supporting them? How many databases do you support on average? What is the size of your team? Trying to get ideas for the head count of our DBA team here and wondering what the industry standard is.
