Background process trace files

I've got the <sid>SMON.TRC, <sid>PMON.TRC etc... files on NT server with Oracle V7.3.3 but on a NT server with Oracle version 8.0.5 these trace files are not being created. The BACKGROUND_DUMP_DEST is defined in INIT<sid>.ORA. I've had a look at the manuals but can't see a mechanism to actually have these trace files generated. It seems it should happen automatically. Can anyone shed some light on this for me please?

Sean :)
