Hi:
When in nomount mode, you only bring up a INSTANCE, no database yet. In the init.ora file, all the parameters, I believe, are either memory related or processes related except 'controlfile'. If in nomount, the controlfile parameter is not even touched untill you mount database. The INSTANCE and DATABASE are so independent that from a single instance you can even bring up diffrent databases. This should help explaining the situation you were in.

Interesting. I have not considered this before. I would assume the reason is that the controlfile is database specific and in the nomount stage you have an instance up and no database mounted.

Hi all,

I was just checking the availability of v$ views in nomount and mount stages. I got stuck with V$CONTROLFILE .

As the controlfile locations are specified in init.ora file , I think it should be available in NOMOUNT stage itself.

It doesn't give any error and displays ZERO record in NOMOUNT stage while in mount stage it displays the correct info.

     Could someone explain please ....

TIA,
Rajesh
