Boy are you lucky... you are going to Lynux.. I'm still stuck on Novelless = 4.11 because the net addamn doesn't understand unix and pulls a lot of = weight here. Best of luck.

Well since I cause this debate, let me give you my side of the story. I have been running oracle on solaris for two years now with excellent results.
Unfortunately the solaris server is already too old, and the operating system is old too. We do not have a contract with sun anymore because of money, money.
Solaris is a great operating system, and I will use it again if it was on = my
hands.
BUT unfortunately, it is not free.=20
Linux was the best solution I could find. And it works really well too. Except that I am just getting to know it more.

It's good to know that Linux is now tier 1 support by Oracle. But Solaris is THE development platform for Oracle.

Plus being a tier 1 support doesn't mean the OS (that includes Linux and = NT)
is as good as Solaris.

One comment I would like to make is that the Linux version is now tier 1 supported iby Oracle, just like Sun Sparc Solaris and Windows NT releases. The
versions starting from 8.0.5, 8.1.5 to 8.1.6 have progressively become = more
and
more stable. I know because I struggled with each one. There still are problems with the release, but for the most part the 8.1.6 version is very stable. The most notable improvement was the standardization of the JVM, which
allowed the Universal Installer to finally run with no problems. Give it = a
try, it may just surpise you. Now as far as pricing goes for an intel platform, I think it's way over priced. :P
