It is probably referring to the OraInventory directory which needs to be
created by root.
As of Oracle 8.x there is a OraInstall.sh and a root.sh that both need to
be run as root to create
the orainventory directory and the oratab startup database file.
Not sure how you can get around the situation without su -ing to the super
user root, but
there may be a way to look at the script and insert a su root -c into it.
Don't run the install as root, that will play havoc with your machine and screw up the install.
