I've been testing the gather_database_stats procedure of the dbms_stats package and i'm back to plain old analyze.
In theory, the stale option is supposed to analyze only objects with the monitoring flag.
In the real life, there are those bugs : For 8.1.5 and 8.1.6, bug 1192012 : a table could be skip when using gather stale
For 8.1.5, bug 964359 which generates an ORA-600 when using compute, the workaround is estimate 99%
