Hi Maria,

You don't need X on the box to run an X application, all you need is an X server somewhere that you can talk to. If you don't have one, you can download a free one from http://www.microimages.com/. Once installed on your workstation, you then just point the DISPLAY variable at your X server, and you can then run any X application that you like. Try xclock for a simple test.

Regards,
Steve Adams

Hello List.

I need to figure out how to install Oracle 8.1.6 on a "hardened" unix operating system outside of the firewall. In other words, many of the routine functions and accesses that are typically found on unix systems inside of a firewall are not available. This includes the elements necessary to run X sessions. According to Oracle support, X-windows is required to install 8.1.6. But my unix sys admin is reluctant to install X-windows on this unix box because of security reasons. Has anyone run into this situation?

Thanks
