you will actually find that the installer is java based which still requires you to set your DISPLAY variable, but you should ensure that the jre (java runtime engine) resides on your host.

if your sysadmin is concerned about security now, wait till you tell him you need jre. :-)

if you require jre, you can get it at http://www.jresoft.com

don't expect the installer to fly on your screen if your doing it remotely neither. i was on a 256k and it took an additional 2.5 hours due to the massive amounts of 'pretty' images that oracle utilise within the installer program. doooh ! bring back char mode.
