I suggested to Jared Steel some time ago that maybe it is better to have a small subscription fee (maybe waived for people from poor countries) and to have commercial provider. I would gladly pay some reasonable amount of money to subscribe.

I believe the list owner sent a mail a while back addressing this. IIRC, the Fatcity server caches messages and sends them out in a "burst" to keep list overhead down...
