Hi All, Environment : Solaris 2.6 : db version : 8.0.4 One of my developers was accessing the database thru SQL*NET. He was doing simple commands (like descry. Table structures, etc) in SQL PLUS. After some time his screen hung. He could not close the screen. He ended sql task through task manager on PC. After this, I queried the table v$session and the following are the details of v$session table query. Username – hall :::: sid -- 13 :::: serial# --5555 ::: status - active I gave the following command. ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION ’13,5555’; Now, I got error ---- ORA – 00030 : user session ID does not exist I repeated the above sequence of actions after 5 minutes, i.e., querying the v$session and then giving the command --- alter system kill session. I got same error message as above. (while the above activity is going on, other developers were accessing db through SQL NET). QUESTIONS : 1. Can any body please explain, why this above error came even when I can see the username, sid and status as active in v$session. 2. Also, please, is there any other way to kill an active user session? Subject: How to kill a = user=20 active session?

Hi=20 All,

Environment=20 : Solaris 2.6 : db version : 8.0.4

One of=20 my developers was accessing the database thru SQL*NET.  He was doing simple commands = (like=20 descry. Table structures, etc) in SQL PLUS.  After some time his screen = hung.  He could not close the = screen.  He ended sql task through = task manager=20 on PC.  After this, I = queried the=20 table v$session and the following are the details of v$session table=20 query.

Username=20 – hall   :::: = sid  -- 13  ::::  serial# --5555  :::  status -=20 active

  I gave the following=20 command.

        =20 ALTER SYSTEM KILL SESSION=20 ’13,5555’;

Now, I=20 got error ---- ORA – 00030 : user session ID does not=20 exist

I=20 repeated the above sequence of actions after 5 minutes, i.e., querying = the=20 v$session and then giving the command --- alter system kill=20 session.

I got=20 same error message as above. (while the above activity is going on, = other=20 developers were accessing db through SQL =20 NET).

QUESTIONS=20 :

1.      =20 Can=20 any body please explain,  why this=20 above error came even when I can see the username, sid and status as = active in=20 v$session.

2.      =20 Also,=20 please, is there any other way to kill an active user=20 session?

         =20

 Thanks in=20 advance,

Rao
