NEVER give them DBA role. They can buy DBA books from the bookstore and "practise" on your database! Developers are very dangerous species.

Here, they have to beg me even for the RESOURCE role! :P

At this site, we do not give application developers the dba role. But we have created a role which thru which we give them specific privileges. eg. Select on the dba views and execute on several of the dbms packages.
