Charlie,

Please note I said that if they were not in archivelog mode, they could just use the backup and copy it to disk.

Perhaps a better way to phrase it would have been:

if you have the luxury of a cold backup, just copy the files to disk and start the database. If not, then follow the procedure I outlined
