Chuck,

Did you try migrating from 7.3 to 8.0 first, then go to 8.1.5/6? I've done half a dozen migrations from 7.3.4 to 8.0.6 with zero problems (they were on Solaris - maybe the migration doesn't work as well on SGI). I think 8.0.6 is a more stable version than 8.1.5.
