LOG_BLOCK_CHECKSUM default value & others?

Given the function of the LOG_BLOCK_CHECKSUM when it is set to TRUE does anyone know why it's default value is FALSE?. Is there some unacceptable overhead involved or what?

Also, are there any other database parameters which have default values which you think are best changed up/down or switched on?

Hhhhhhmmmm.... now wondering if the default parameter values are consistent throughout various releases???

Regards,
Sean :)
