Janardhan,
I was also in the same impression two months back. I sent mail to Oracle (i don't remeber the exact address now) requesting clarification reg this.
They clearly replied stating what I had mentioned in my earlier reply. I have that reply also with me in my hotmail account which I cannot access now.I had forwarded that mail to some of my friends. I will try to get it and post it over here.

Xiaoliang Chen, Once you are certfied in any = particular stream( 7/8/8i), your certification is valid forever.And whenever you = want to take up the upgradation exam just take it.

Best thing for you is to go for 8 = stream and later you can think of taking up 8i upgradation.My observation is = that it is much difficult to clear 8i exam directly because of so many new = features.
