"C" is a benchmark measuring performance for online transaction processing, whereas "D" measures decision support performance. They are data sets and batches of queries designed to simulate real-world applications. In theory, it should be difficult to design a system that performed well in in these benchmarks and didn't also perform well in production, unlike say, polygons/sec measurements used for graphics cards, or specweb96 for web servers. In theory.
