RE: bitmap indexes in 7.3.4

Do
  Select parameter,value from v$option. See if bit-mapped indexes is set to TRUE.It comes as
 a separate option with Oracle new releases.

Are you running the Enterprise or Workgroup version of 7.3.4 ??

I had exactly the same problem with 7.3.3 and it was because the Workgroup version does not support Bitmap indexes
