I agree with what's being sad and disagree at the same time.

The economy does look good in Canada now, esp. in the next five years as a whole generation of baby boomers (kids of the WWII veterans) are about to retire and there will be all these positions to fill. So the time to get in is now, in my opinion.

As usual very little forethought is going into this, and so there will be a mad scramble in every sector (including IT) in the next couple of years.

They are talking now about "regenerating the work force" but organisations are just starting to really tackle the problem.

Canada is a HUGE country with relatively low population, and there doesn't seem to be much commonality between the provinces right now. The parliament is broken up along regional lines, this doesn't bode well for the future of the country in my opinion. The atmosphere and the dialogues are pretty divisive. I am young so probably this has been the case for years, I don't know.

I disagree with the idea of putting the economy first at all costs. I mean pollution, depletion of primary resources, cigarettes and gas guzzling vehicles are great for the economy: They create jobs in primary industries, they create healthcare jobs (because people get sick in polluted environments), I don't really want to get into this it's all been said before. The trick in economics and marketing is to force people to exchange goods even though they don't really need to, it's great for the GDP. (example: mandatory software upgrades). The problem is that the assets of the country (trees, quality of water, standard of living, etc. ) suffer. Short term gain for long term pain, and it's a downward spiral. We spend time doing things we don't really need to do, but there is no way of increasing people's quality of life right now. When was the last time that "quality of life" was measured and discussed on TV? They just talk about the stock market and the GDP. I wonder who that serves.

Here in Nova Scotia the forests have been gradually replaced with softwood trees, and most of the older trees are gone. It's just short-term, bottom-line thinking.

Part of the divisiveness is because the middle class is melting away, as a few of them are getting richer but most of them are getting gradually poorer. So the average income is up but the real income for most people has been steadily declining in the last ten years. Child poverty is up dramatically because single mothers are falling through the cracks.

The parliament is broken up right now along regional lines, whereas in the U.S. it seems to be broken up into rich vs. poor. There doesn't seem to be any long-term thinking, no will to do the right things because short term thinking prevails. And the opposites can't seem to work together, the will just isn't there. Maybe if political parties were less important, and individual MPs (that's Canadian for Representatives) could vote freely on things it would be different. In Canada short-term thinking is about 4 years, that's the turnaround time for elections. It's a real problem in my opinion.

I guess we just covered the spectrum of political opinion in Canada, I don't entirely subscribe to it but I think there are quality of life issues that should not be ignored as they tend to be.

Healthy constructive dialogue is good, though. There isn't enough of it as Canadians like to be "nice". Did you know that in Canada if people are not happy with the service they receive, they only complain about 4 times out of ten? In the U.S. it's 7 times out of ten, I was told. And I imagine they don't start by saying "I don't know if I did something wrong, but..."

I am not steadfast in my opinions, I can see both sides of the argument (I want to make more money too, there is never enough), I try to keep both sides in mind. It's a tough call, though. Sometimes I think you can't reconcile the two they are like fire and water.

So the answer re. DBA work probably is: Yes you can find work as a DBA, but will you get paid as much as if you were working in the States? Probably not. If you are concerned about quality of life as well as income, and you can compromise one for the other, Canada is a great place to be.

Do you think the incompetent bozos who are now running the state
will be
replaced by competent bozos (Socialist, Republican, Facist or
whatever)?

Boy I wish I still had your optimism on politicians

Right now, BC has one of the worst economies of all the provinces in
Canada. That's entirely thanks to our incompetent moronic Socialist
scumbag
Government, who've been doing everything they can to grind us into
the
	ground.

[gasp. swallow]. OK, I'm better now.

Seriously, Elections are in spring 2001, and after the NDP is
turfed,
things will rebound pretty fast. BC 'naturally' has the resources
and
conditions to be a booming economic zone. It takes a lot of effort
to
depress our economy. Unfortunately the incumbent bozos have been
expending
	that effort and more.

	OK, I wasn't better now.
