Quite simply, the more the better. In previous incarnations (other jobs, not lives :) I have been both the DBA and Sysadmin. The more experience you have with Unix (or NT, if that is the platform you prefer), the better your ability to determine OS related bottlenecks and performance issues. Plus, nix is a fun OS to use.
I'd still love to do sysadmin work, but since I work for $OUTSOURCING_COMPANY, and the physical machine is about 5000 miles away from where I live, the commute would be a killer.....
