If the context is Networking: A service (database) is defined in tnsnames.ora (ADDRESS= maps the service name to the network address of the hostname). The listener.ora can have a SID_LIST (SERVICE_LIST) for each service (database or application) it listens for. Check out the Oracle8 Networking guide if this is the service definition you're looking for.
