Legato SM vs. Veritas NetBackup

Hello,

As a corporate standard, we back up all Oracle databases with EBU/RMAN in conjunction with Veritas NetBackup. Specifically, we do all hotbackups directly to tape, through the use of a tape server - not a tape device connected directly to the Oracle server. We are having all kinds of problems with Veritas in general - they still do not support 8.0.6 or 8.1.6 databases, we cannot backup directly to tape on NT, linking the NetBackup libraries in to the Oracle kernel is shaky, etc. Since Legato is bundled with the Oracle server software, we are now considering it. I would like to know if anyone is currently set up with Legato running hotbackups to a tape server. Are there any issues or gotchas? Are there Oracle versions not supported by Legato? What about operating systems? Also, since it comes bundled with the server CD, is it free? Any responses would be much appreciated.

Jim

Advantages: you don't have to worry that someone will run a program that will cause a table to extend and it will fail for lack of space

Disadvantages: you don't KNOW that they have extended, so you have to monitor it very carefully, because what you REALLY want to know is if the tables are extending quickly so that you can size them better
