I left a job once where the working conditions were horrible and my bosses were complete jerks. When I left I resisted the temptation to tell them what I thought about the way they ran their company. I dearly wanted to tell them off but could see no benefit in doing so.

When looking to change jobs again these same jerks gave my prospective employer a glowing recommendation which went a long way toward landing the job. I learned once again that the less you say the less you say wrong.

When considering an action such as yours remember this: Perception is reality. Instead of being known as the hero who slayed and ogre manager on his way out you may become known as the problem employee who got his boss fired. The boss who was the father of three and active volunteer at the local soup kitchen. It doesn't matter if it isn't true if it is what people perceive.

Don't sling crap in a room full of fans.

I totally agree. The simple fact is that when I left my last job, I was brutally honest with HR. Now my old division manager is no more a division manager.

Managers beware. Payback is a b**** (pardon me).

There is no such thing as "verbal reassurance". You either have it in writing or you don't.

As far as being "abused", they certainly don't see it that way. Quick refresher in economics. This is capitalism, the point is to maximize profits, and minimize costs. As much as you may get along with the people or company you work for, ultimately you're a "cost" on a balance sheet, and so consequently you have to stand up for yourself. If you are pushed, and you take it, you may keep getting pushed. It's rare that corporations behave compassionately, in my experience. But knowing all this, you'll fare a lot better.

The fact is, if you're a DBA, or any type of computer expert, you're in DEMAND in the industry. Perhaps they need a reminder of this. Know the demand, know your market value.

Just my $0.02.
