I know a group of club kids who'll refer to their girlfriends as "my trollop" and it's considered respectful. What a strange world we live in.

Usenet tradition is to refer to girlfriend/boyfriend/husband/wife/ live-in lover/whatever as "SO" (for "Significant Other") which, while a bit clinical, does tend to negate misunderstanding.
