hi john,

try doing a "man gethostname" , this should show you the "C" prototypes for the call.
most "C" books will have this but I recommend an excelent reference book on this is by "Stevens, Advanced Unix System Programming" by Addison/ Wesley press.

I am being forced to write external C programs...

Can anyone provide me with a quick bit of code to demonstrate how to call the gethostname routine (this is on AIX), and display the result.

It would be much appreciated.

John
