Sanjay,

follow these steps.

  1. Uninstall both d2k and oracle 8i.
  2. Clear the oracle registry entries.
  3. Clear the directories from the hdd.
  4. Install D2k 6. This will create orant and that will be the oracle = home.
  5. Install oracle 8i and accept whatever oracle home it provides. Don't = force it to change.
  6. Check the database startup. I guess that will be smooth.
  7. Locate the tnsnames.ora in the oracle 8i home. It will be = \Oracle\Ora81\Network\Admin. Open the file and pickup the service = entries from this file.
  8. Go into \orant\net80\admin. Open the tnanames.ora. Add the service u = have for oracle 8i.
  9. Launch forms/reports designer with the user name, password and give = the service name fully. It will connect.

If u have any problem, send me across both the tnsnames.ora.

Atish.

I guess u have installed D2k 4.5 or 5.0. In ur case there would be = two oracle homes; \ORANT and \ORACLE. The Oracle 8i database is residing = at the \Oracle folder where as during ur installation of D2k u might = have changed the Oracle home to ORANT. So the system is confused. If = this is the case: There are round about ways to set up the proper path = thru registry and .ora file. But the simple soln would be to: uninstall = both, install d2k first and then install Oracle 8i. After that u will be = able to start the database; but u will face difficulty in connecting to = the database from the D2k. For that an additional service in the = tnasnames.ora, which is in \orant\admin\network folder, would enable the = connection. Good luck.=20

After successful installation of Oracle Server, I tried to install = Developer 2000 which also succeeded. After rebooting the system, I was = unable to start the database.=20

      It gave=20
      no such protocol.=20
I was unable to start the listener service.=20

      I donot understand the problem.Any help appreciated.=20

Also how do I manage multiple oracle Homes.=20
      Any idea, documentation.=20
