delay starting sqlplus in 8.1.6

As part of our monitoring system, we have a script that runs sqlplus, selects * from v$bgprocess, and then exits. This lets us know oracle is available.

Now that we have started running 8.1.6, we have noticed that after the database has been up and running for a few hours, occasionally, it takes 5 minutes or more for this script to accomplish its task. It doesn't happen every time, just often enough to be really annoying.

The OS is hp-ux 11 (N-Class & L-class machines).

Has anybody seen similar behavior with 8.1.6? Seen a solution?
