You can place conditions on LONG columns in WHERE clauses. You might try writing a PL/SQL block, read the LONG into a VARCHAR2 variable and do the comparison on the variable.

I know there was a discussion on this on the list only the other day, but please can someone just update me on it.

A developer has just asked how to select from a table where the condition part of the statement refers to a LONG datatype column. They then get ORA-00997 Illegal use of LONG datatype.
