Different SID: I haven't tried it but I would say no because the standby control file (contains the SID) is generated on the primary DB.

Current Redo Log: This is a SOL scenario. The current redo log is lost for all time if you activate the standby. I researched into this question several months ago to include all Oracle documentation and by finally calling Oracle support. This is why a standby is only meant for catastrophic fail over and hot high availability.

See
http://sitelicense.arizona.edu/~oradoc/DOC/server.815/a67773/standby.htm#168 30 for the following references that support my answers above:

If you place your production and standby databases on the same host, some operating systems will not allow you to mount two instances with the same database name on the same machine simultaneously.

The redo logs that you apply to the standby database must be either archived or non-current redo logs.

PS: We run a standby v8.1.5 at our company.

To: Multiple recipients of list ORACLE-L Subject: Automated standby database

Can an ASD have a different SID name than the primary database? Also, when the ASB is activated, how is the current online log from the primary database applied?
