Just a guess, but reducing # of datafiles could speed up checkpoints. You'd have less datafile headers to update.

BTW how come when I reply-all to the new list, it doesn't CC the original poster? It just doubles up on oracle-l_at_fatcity.com? I had to manuall add you to the CC of this message.
