We've got Oracle for Unixware 2.01. Unixware is a x86 SYSVR4 Unix just like Solaris. In fact our disribution media and manuals are the same as those for Solaris x86.

We have been very happy with Oracle on a Pentium 90. We have about 10 constant connections, and a WWW interface to our database. Interactive performance is very good, but big data loads take a while.

Important things to remember:
1) Buy lots and lots of ram. We have 96 megs, which seems just about right. (We have about 3 million records and about 1 gig of data)

2) Use as many disks as possible. Oracle will query indexes and data files separately so having them across multiple hard disks allows the OS to move data from one drive while the heads are positioning on another. Same is true of multiple disk controller cards as well.

3) Buy lots of RAM. I can't say this enough.

You might want to wait a couple months for a dual processor pentium PRO. From what I hear, you'll get lots more bang for your buck with a P6 Pro and an 32bit OS like Solaris. You can always buy a cheap single processor Pentium now to get started and get a dual Pro a few months from now when they are more abundant and stable.

Does anyone have any pros or cons about Oracle WG Server for Solaris x86?
We are considering running Oracle on a
multiprocessor Pentium machine but I haven't read much in this list about such a platform? Any comments or experience would be most welcome :)
