oracle process dies on mount

We're running Oracle 7.1.3 on a SparcServer10 running Solaris 2.4:

We just upgraded to 2.4 and, due to circumstances that I won't go into, we had to do a complete install. We tried to get all of the oracle system files into their correct places with the correct permissions (i.e. files like orasrv, oratab, etc.) but we were apparently unsuccessful. When we try to mount the database now, we lock up sqldba, the oracleSID process dies, and we get a core dump. Any ideas on where I should start would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
