Hello,

I cannot connect to an oracle database (remote) on Forms6i with error code ORA-12203 "TNS:Unable to connect to destination"
while:

1 I have Identical tnsnames.ora files defined for Toad and oracle
forms builder
2 I can connect and query in Toad any of the SIDs defined.
3 When I tnsping any given SID , it's ok (e.g tnsping WM)
4 When I tnsping80 the same SIDs from forms/bin dir (e.g tnsping80 WM), it fails.
See screen dump attached.

please Help

regards,
Didier

Scan your PC for 'tnsnames.ora' and I think you will find that you have three copies.

Search this forum for 'tnsnames' and 'ifile' or 'tns_admin'. I recommend the use of 'tns_admin'.

Thanks David

I have actually been through my hard drive and compared all the tnsnames.ora files I've got.
1] I ultracompared all with the one for Toad and ensured they are identical (Toad is using the one under oracle_home...\..\NETWORK\ADMIN)

2] I have even checked the registry key tns_admin and it actually points to the version under oracle_home...\..\NETWORK\ADMIN directory.

The problem remains the same and maybe you should know that server-side the SIDs have changed from 3 character to 2 character naming and my troubles started from there...I have updated all tnsnames files accordingly with the right name-value pairs for SERVICE_NAME part.

I am still checking your suggestions on the forum posts but have not yet found a suitable workaround.

You say:
I have actually been through my hard drive and compared all the tnsnames.ora files I've got.

And how many did you find?

David

under c:\oracle\dev2000\NET80 (Forms installation)

i've got 1 under ADMIN and 1 under TNSAPI and 1 under ADMIN\SAMPLE

under c:\oracle\ora10g\product\10.2.0\db_1

i've got 1 under NETWORK\ADMIN, 1 under NETWORK\ADMIN\SAMPLE,

under win32/SQLNET/8_0_6_0_0-1181195/install/NET80/CLIENT

1 in the above folder and 1 under ../NET23/CLIENT

well I have not checked all actually because I now that the only ones concerning me are those under oracle installation (c:\oracle\ora10g\product\10.2.0\db_1) and forms (c:\oracle\dev2000\NET80)

David,

don't bother anymore with this. My last resort was to reinstall Forms and Reports. Now everything's back to normal and my first move was to make an image of my machine afterwards.
I just would like to say that this is a pitfall of Forms and Reports. They are really sensitive and sometimes they just go crazy for no apparent reason.

cheers anyway and...

have a beer, it's the week-end dude! Cool
