I can't get BREAK to work in a *.sql file. Is there a setting I should use to make it active. The command is ignored.

Posting your script might be a good start.

CUt and paste your entire session, including the .sql file.

Remove what is wrong and it will work.

BREAK take column alias or expression in input.
