I have done an rman backup of the database but did not include the controlfile.
the backup was a cold back in database mount stage.

I do not have the database ID. The database was using ASM.

Is there a way to restore this backup??

I only have the backup of the datafiles. AUTO CONTROLFILE BACKUP WAS NOT CONFIGURED.

No, you can't restore your backup without controlfile.

oracle say there is a PL/SQL script that you can use to extract the files from the backup set if you have lost your controlfile backup in RMAN. I'm checking on it.

you can extrant the files.

Even with AUTOBACKUP OFF, RMAN will include a backup of the controlfile and spfile in the backupset of the datafile as long as your backup includes datafile 1.

Yes you are right.

backup database; command only

includes the controlfile and spfile in the backup set even if the AUTO CONTROLFILE BACKUP is off. if AUTO is on then the controlfile backupiece will be created separate out of the backup set.

The control file was restored with

RMAN> restore controlfile from '<path of backupset>

and this worked.

Thankyou

Even if it is not (autobackup is not on)then there may create separate backup set when block size of datafile 1 is not same as block size of controlfile.
