Hi Gurus,
I'm not able to start the dataguard in oracle 8.1.7 on my Standby server. It gives an error & failed:
: Attempt to Start Standby Agent
: Attempt to mount standby database.
: Mount Standby Database completed successfully
: ALERT: Start Standby Agent Failed : State file write of STARTING failed

The Dataguard is running successfully in Primary.
before that when I tried to stop it threw an warning but stopped successfully.:

:Attempt to Stop Standby Agent by COMMANDLINE
: WARNING: Standby PID file is non-existent or not readable in the Data Guard sys directory.
: Attempt to Shutdown Immediate the Standby Database
: Shutdown Immediate of the Standby Database completed successfully

Please help me?
Sunny

Did your Standby was running properly?
Did you try to open it in read only mode?

Post exactly what you did at sql prompt.

What does it mean?

Hi,
I have a setup of primary server & secondary or fallback server. I upgraded my both servers one after the another. Yes the standby was running successfully. Primary one is still running fine (database & dataguard). But while stopping the Dataguard in secondary/ standby it gave error & after rebooting it didn't start. while restarting it it gave that error.
the command I used:
DGDCTL> start sa silent
Command will attempt to start Standby Agent
Attempt to Start Standby Agent
Mounting standby database and starting agent will take a couple of seconds.
ALERT: Start Standby Agent Failed

No I didn't try to run in Read-only mode. could you please elaborate?
